Friday is always a nice day, especially the closer you come to the end of your office hours. I have been here for 1 year and 5 month by now. This month has been "The hungry Ghost Month". The Chinese think that the gates of hell open for a month and Ghost might be streaming out, surrounding us, and as the name tells...they are hungry.
Pic. Food Offering for the hungry ghosts

The month is celebrated by putting out food offerings, burning hell money and set up so called Getai Music shows where local Getai Singers perform Chinese songs. The first row of seats in front of the stage is always left empty so the
Ghosts can have somewhere to sit and watch the show. The hell money is like monopoly money that will be burned in barrels put up around the blocks as an offering to relatives and friends whom now live in the other world. There is also paper houses and paper cars you can by and burn as an offering to those on the other side to give them better fortune and material standard where they are now.

One feels relieved to hear that people do not have to burn real money. These ghosts don't seem to be that picky about stuff like that. It's enough for them that people know they are there.
Guess so, the lady whom you met briefly, has been cleaning the house like a maniac now for 3 weeks. I heard that there is also a belief that the ghosts and bad fortune are drown to houses who hasn't been properly cleaned before the seventh lunar month.
Kan förklara varför asiatiska barn är mycket bättre på att städa än svenska barn i min inte helt vetenskapliag undersökning.
Well, looking at me and i.e. Martin W might give some substance to your hypothesis. Non of us are very careful of keeping things tidy and neat I think. Probably due to our Swedish style upbringing with lack of ghost cleaning traditions :-). Dont know about you, it seems like you keep order at home though... hmm mysterious
